ARRIVAL DAY

DESCRIPTION

Girona is an incredible city with a magnificent past reflected around the city. You can walk along its narrow winding city streets or a top of the medieval walls that span the eastern border of Old Town.

Another jewel of Girona, is the Cathedral de Santa Maria, where you can take a picture in the steps leading up to it, and if you are a fan of Game of Thrones you will hear the crowd chanting “Shame, shame, shame…”. Not only the cathedral but the streets of the Old Town, also known as the Jewish Quarter or “Call Jueu” in Catalan, were used as the setting for the streets of Braavos.

When visiting Girona you can’t also miss stopping at one of the many bridges that cross the Onyar river, including the Eiffel Bridge, constructed by Gustav Eiffel just before the Tower Eiffel. From the bridges you will be able to see the colourful cases that surround this river.

Museums, churches, historic monuments and bars and cafes, Girona is a city where you won’t get bored.

STAGE 1: HINCAPIE LOOP

DESCRIPTION

The first stage of this tour is a classic for road cyclists in Girona, the Hincapie Loop, named after George Hincapie, one of the first professional cyclists to make the city its base.

The traditional starting point of this route is The Stone Bridge, North of the main square in the city center. Exiting the city, the first climb of the day is found, Els Àngels, one of the most famous mountain ports in Girona. Its fame is not due to the harshness of the climb but due to its proximity to the city, which makes it ideal for those cyclists looking for a quick ride to stretch their legs and warm up.

When you reach the top, the descend towards the Emporda’s region and its medieval villages starts. Those charming villages are the perfect place to stop for a snack or coffee, before starting the next climb of the day to Santa Pellaia. This mountain port is cherished for its smooth and constant gradient upwards, as well as its fun and fast descent

Once in Cassà de la Selva you return to Girona while enjoying the views to the Gavarres Natural Area.

STAGE 3: COASTAL LOOP

DESCRIPTION

This is the ideal route for those who love cycling with views to the sea. Leaving Girona and pedaling through a plain past Cassà de la Selva, you will enter the massif de l’Ardenya, also known as massif de Cadiretes.

In there you will climb Sant Grau, a light ascent of 9 km with a beautiful descend with sharp turns. Once you arrive to Tossa de Mar, you will continue to Sant Feliu de Guíxols, a “legbreaking” road with little flat terrain where to rest, which helps you understand why this coast is called the Costa Brava, the rugged coast.

Once in Sant Feliu the terrain becomes flatter and allowing you to rest while still riding next to the sea. Heading to Palamós and arriving in Calonge, you will turn to head inland again to climb up to Coll de La Ganga, a fun winding road that runs through the natural area of Les Gavarres. From there you will continue to Girona, passing through Monells, a beautiful medieval village that has been used in various occasions as a movie set.

STAGE 4: EMPORDA MEDIEVAL TOWNS LOOP

DESCRIPTION

Today’s stage will let you discover the Medieval Towns of l’Empordà region. Riding mostly through flat roads surrounded by sunflowers fields and apple orchards.

Torroella de Montgrí, Corçà, Ullastret, Peratallada and Palau Sator, are all beautiful towns where the Old Town holds cobbled streets, arched squares, stone buildings or battlements where you can marvel at how the pass of time has affected some of this buildings.

To get back to Girona you will Monells and start your climb in the steeper side of Els Angels.

This was an amazing experience. We did the 3 day, self guided tour (I’m sad I didn’t get to do the 2nd route in the four day series but will have to come back). Everyone we worked with (Montse and Girard) was thoughtful and conscientious about the service they provided. For example, CBT provided us with well maintained Canyon bikes fit exactly to our dimensions and preferences (they met via zoom to orient us about the biking landscape), met with us at our convenience when we arrived in Girona, arranged wonderful hotels to stay at, including the lovely Del Moli del Mig in the countryside outside of Torroella de Montgri, transported our luggage from hotel to hotel, and provided us with great routes through Ride With GPS (you cannot do these routes without it). The routes were everything Girard said they would be including the Els Angels climb on the last day.

We booked a 5-day self-guided tour of the Costa Brava with Catalonia Bike Tours and had an absolutely incredible time. The bikes that two of us rented were very nice and in great condition (Canyon Endurace with eTap) and had just the right gearing for the many iconic climbs on the route. The route plans were impeccable, taking you through quiet scenic countryside, well-renowned climbs, stunning descents, gorgeous towns of many flavors and sizes along the coast and of all modern and medieval eras. There is such a unique charm to riding in Catalonia, the other riders always wave, the drivers are always courteous. I can't wait to come back to experience it again. The only thing we are sad about is that we've already experienced it for the first time, and we can't get that initial feeling of astonishment back again.

I had a fantastic experience with Catalonia Bike Tours recently. They were incredibly on point with every detail. They picked me up at the train station and drove us to the first hotel. They organized lunches and dinners for us and luggage transport between hotels. The support van driver and our tour guide were kind, funny and instantly part of the group energy. Our guide was Cristina, who worked closely with our Support driver and 'back up guide', Miquel. We ate local food and stayed in gorgeous locations at very nice hotels.I highly recommend Catalonia Bike Tours and would book with them again in a second.

We had a super Costa Bravo bike tour with Catalonia Bike Tours. We did 4 days of self guided biking starting and ending in Girona. We stayed in the towns of Girona, Pals, and Platya de Aro and they were each unique and wonderful. The hotels were top notch! We loved going to the beach and swimming in Platya de Aro and the walled village of Pals and hotel we stayed in were fabulous. The bikes provided were perfect and Catalonia Bike Tours was very supportive, checking in most days to see how things were going. The app was a little tricky to use in the busier towns but we always managed. Overall this was a bike trip and company I highly recommend!

My family of four took a 4 day self guided tour from Girona to Platja D’aro to Pals then back to Girona. We rented bikes and they were amazing. 3 canyon gravel bikes and a Scott ebike for my daughter. They were immaculate and great bikes. The route was excellent, the app worked great and the riding was a lot of fun. Nice mix of everything and the bikes were up to the challenge and the right tool for the job. Transfers to and from Barcelona went off without a problem. Montse helped us out of a self induced problem, going above and beyond. Gerard and I traded sport food and had great a great chat on the way to Girona. The towns we visit Ted were amazing and well chosen. I’d go again in a heartbeat. We did over 200 km in four days with a 15 and 12 year old. It was just awesome. Thank you!
